Over a thousand Anolis LED lighting fixtures are lighting three major areas of the Mall of Africa in Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa … the result of a remarkable collaboration between architectural lighting designer Deryl Jan, European LED manufacturer Anolis and South African distributor DWR Distribution, who also took on the exacting specialist installation of this high-profile project.

Project Details

The Mall of Africa opened in 2016 and is the largest retail experience ever built in South Africa to date, covering 131,000 square metres of retail space with two main shopping levels connecting directly to Waterfall City Park. The unique architecture and form was inspired by the natural geographical elements of the African continent.

Over a thousand Anolis fixtures were installed on the huge project and include:
• ArcLine™ Outdoor Optic 36
• ArcSource™ Outdoor 24MC Integral
• ArcSource™ Inground 24MC Integral
• ArcSource™ 1
• ArcSource™ 1MC
• ArcPower™ Rack Unit

Architectural Lighting Designer, Deryl Jan of PPA Lightco specified which Anolis fixtures were to be used and DWR Distribution supplied and installed the products, supervised by Team Leader Keith Pugin.

Deryl has been using Anolis products for several years in his work and said, “The quality and the engineering are excellent and it’s definitely an LED light-source of choice” he confirmed. He also had a good experience with Anolis installed in Protea Court, Sandton, Johannesburg - another premium SA retail project, which he worked on in 2011 for lighting designer Paul Pamboukian.

“I was already confident of the quality and performance of Anolis so I was extremely keen to stay with the brand for this, and also because they were so knowledgeable and helpful in actioning the bespoke adjustments necessary for the lights to work in this environment” he commented.

He also said “At every stage of the process I had seven-star service and attention to detail from the team at Anolis in the Czech Republic.”
The three aspects of the Mall currently lit with Anolis are the roof, a selection of trees in the adjacent City Park and landscaping around the park including a cycle track, many gardens and a walkway underpass.

Anolis was chosen for its quality, proven reliability and for the manufacturer’s willingness to customise and adapt their technology to ensure that Deryl and DWR had exactly the right products needed to deliver world class lighting for this pioneering commercial venture.
