This Lux Awards 2019 winning project showcases the effort and care The University of Sheffield has put into to redeveloping its inner city campus and is now a popular meeting place for students and members of the public alike in the heart of the city.

Project Details

The University of Sheffield has transformed the Concourse adjacent to the Students Union into a vibrant and flexible public open space. It provides a social, safe area with new lighting, an art wall, redesigned green areas and enhanced seating. This project recently won a Lux Award for the Outdoor Project of the Year and has also been shortlisted for thee Darc Awards – Structures High Budget.

The area includes pedestrian zones on both sides and underneath the A57 dual carriageway, a main artery of transport in the heart of the city.

Dan Lister (Lighting Associate at Arup) approached Anolis to offer a tiltable inground RGBW solution to illuminate the columns that support the carriageway. After careful consideration the ArcSource Inground 24MC was selected due to the high output, smooth colour mixing, and tilting mechanism, ensuring perfect illumination of the support columns.

Dan said “A key element of the project was the need for an RGBW inground fixture with the ability to fine-tune the positioning of the light output to accurately wash the central bridge piers. The ArcSource Inground was the product that met our requirement; the use of the DMX RDM protocol was a unique feature allowing each fixture to be adjusted without needing to open up the fittings on site.

Coupled with a strong light output and colour mixing able to compliment the bridge materials, we are delighted with the end result; transforming the Concourse into a popular meeting place for students and members of the public alike."

The unit produces over 1,500 lumens consuming only 65W. Build to withstand the rigours of inground installation, extreme weather and constant footfall, the unit is IP68 and IK10 rated, constructed from an aluminium housing, stainless-steel and anti-skid tempered “Watch Glass” front.

An additional 8 ArcLine Outdoor 18 linear units were specified to illuminate the inside surfaces of the support columns. This creates a beautiful even wash of lighting across the structure. These fixtures have a slimline design due to the remote power supply, further reducing fixture footprint. Producing over 3,200 lumens and available in a wide range of optics, these units are perfect for any wall washing application. The tough aluminium body and tempered glass contribute to the high IP65 rating, ensuring continued performance for many years.

These linear units are offered with a choice of RGBW, PureWhite or SmartWhite LED’s. Visit our products page to experience the full range of Anolis fixtures.
