Anolis Upgrades JCB Head Office Theatre House Lights
The brief was to upgrade the JCB HQ old theatre house lights to RGBW downlights and ultimately reduce energy use.

BACKGROUND

JCB is a globally recognised construction and agricultural machinery manufacturer based in Rochester, Staffordshire, UK.

Founded in 1945 by Joseph Cyril Bamford in a tiny lock-up garage in the market town of Uttoxeter, to a global brand renowned for its pioneering spirit some 75 years later with an 11,000-strong worldwide workforce that make-up the JCB family.

The 250-seat JCB Theatre, located at their head office in Rochester, Staffordshire is used daily for a wide range of events. These span from press conferences to product launches, outside broadcasts and regular factory tour presentations. The JCB Factory tours offer an amazing opportunity to venture behind the scenes of their world-famous diggers. This unique event offers historical information, little-known facts, exciting insights and the opportunity to get close up with the manufacturing process. The space has also hosted the JCB Global Dealer Conference which brings together the company’s top executives and customers.

The objective of the theatre upgrade was to create a professional, flexible space for regular usage whilst reducing energy use.

SOLUTION

JCB’s original HQ theatre house lighting scheme was dated, they were unable to source replacements or component spares and were not energy efficient or aligned to the company's sustainability focus. The key aim was to replace the 40 existing downlights which were failing RGB LED pars with a homogenised RGBW system that provides smooth dimming, variable white colour temperatures and vibrant colour mixing. Important considerations also featured around the new lighting solution providing low maintenance and silent operation. Specific optics needed to be 60° to cover the seating and 20°aisles separately. This allows the theatre technicians to zone these areas separately for independent dimming and colour mixing options.

The system integrators, Brighter Productions were able to use the existing mounting positions within the theatre lighting grid and bridges which helped to reduce additional site works and make use of the DMX data system. This resulted in reduced installation time so that the theatre was not closed for longer than needed.

The HP111 Ambiane recessed with its integrated mounted yoke provided the perfect solution for the new lighting scheme, delivering an endless array of positioning options, coupled with the L3 (Low Light Linearity) dimming system allowing seamless fades to black even when mixed with traditional sources. The fixtures enabled the theatre to create a range of lighting options for this much-used space to fulfil each brief depending on how the theatre was being utilised which was an important consideration from the outset.

The high 90+ CRI and variable CCT white light options that are available with the Ambiane range enabled the theatre to be extremely flexible in the delivery of product reveals, conferences and presentations to have the right light levels and colour temperatures from their control system.

Ambiane allows the theatre to be used in everyday white light at 2700K, colour changing and tungsten dimming emulation all from one single light source.
The extra benefit of the intelligent power balancing from the HP111 downlights meant they were the best efficient option available as they could always utilise the maximum output in any mixed colour or white feature.
